Volunteers will give a local community outreach center a facelift this weekend.
The Family Focus Center, 2010 Dewey Ave., will receive on Saturday a fresh coat of paint for its halls and some landscaping as part of a volunteer day sponsored by Nicor Gas.
Alan Berkowsky, Evanston fire department chief, serves on the board of Family Focus, a nonprofit group that provides various social services to West Evanston families, and put Nicor in touch with the center. Family Focus and Nicor were a natural pair, said Janelle Jones, Nicor’s director of community relations.
“Family Focus is a family organization. Nicor is a family-oriented company,” Jones said.
Nicor Inc., which owns Nicor Gas, serves 2 million people in northern Illinois.
About 20 Nicor employees will work on the project, but Jones said anyone who would like to volunteer is welcome. “It’s a very large building. I’m sure there are enough supplies to go around.”
Nicor’s volunteer day was launched in 1997 to celebrate a commitment to volunteerism, Jones said. This year more than 200 employees will be involved in projects throughout Illinois.
In years past Nicor volunteers have helped out at the North Shore Senior Center, 840 Dodge Ave., and the YWCA, 1215 Church St.
