Valentine victuals spread the love

Singles mourning the Hallmark holiday of Valentine’s Day may find even their favorite comfort foods have jumped on Cupid’s red and white bandwagon. Evanston eateries are taking the Backstreet Boys’ advice and showing students the shape of their hearts with their Valentine’s Day creations.

If you find teeny-bopper music as bleak as Chicago’s winter, turn to the classics for inspiration. “There is no love sincerer than the love of food,” according to playwright George Bernard Shaw.

Einstein Bros. Bagels, 1745 Sherman Ave., has accepted orders for its heart-shaped bagels since the beginning of the month. Customers can order 13 chocolate- and cranberry-flavored bagels with two tubs of strawberry and cappuccino cream cheese. Assistant manager Randy Lowe said teachers often buy these bagels for their classes or parents bring them home to their families.

“When I first saw them, I thought no one would buy heart-shaped bagels for Valentine’s Day, but they actually do buy them,” Lowe said. “They’re really good, especially when they first come out of the oven.”

Giordano’s, 500 Davis St., takes the holiday cheese factor to a new level with its heart-shaped pizzas. Former manager Larry Brin expects lots of couples and group dates to sample these romantic pies, which come in thin or stuffed varieties. And paprika isn’t the only way to spice up the meal.

“Take it home to your loved one, light a candle, get romantic,” Brin said.
