Flyer cleanup confusion spurs switch to Monday-only policy

Campus flyers posted around Northwestern property will now be cleaned up once a week, on Mondays, giving campus groups a potential full week of exposure.

A publicity committee, composed of administrators, students and Associated Student Government representatives, worked with Facilities Management to establish the new policy.

Monday after business hours is now the ideal time for student groups to put up flyers, said Joel Richlin, ASG campus public relations chairman.

Previously flyers were cleaned up on various days — even up to three times a week in years past — said Brian Kittle, project manager with Facilities Management.

The push for a set day was the result of general confusion among campus groups and students, said Nicole Mash, ASG executive vice president.

“No one knew what days they were picked up on,” said Mash, a Weinberg senior. “With this new policy, not only is it dead-set Monday, but we are confident facilities management will adhere to this (change).”

Mash added that the old policy was often so confusing that student groups would put their flyers up in the middle of the week, only to have them immediately torn down.

Zack Hall, Dance Marathon executive co-chairman, said the change seems positive.

“As long as I’ve been involved with campus publicity, there’s always been confusion with when they take (flyers) down, and (the guidelines) to put them up,” said Hall, a Communication senior. “In that sense, I think it’s a great idea to clarify.”

Richlin discussed the issue at two publicity committee meetings in past weeks. Drawing on his experience in campus activities, Richlin said he pushed for a clearer policy.

“The main thing I wanted to do was to make (rules) simple to convey to student groups so that everyone knows about them,” said Richlin, a Weinberg senior.

Facilities Management is also working with ASG to designate certain areas for flyers and banners, though no rules have been established yet.

“The whole purpose is to keep the campus cleaner looking and to have some guidelines,” said Kittle.
