ASG senator retreat pushes back legislation

Although more than half of Associated Student Government Senate spent the weekend learning about their roles in ASG and brainstorming ideas to effect change on campus, no legislation will be proposed until next week’s meeting, said Kawika Pierson, speaker of the Senate.

Second-year Elder Sen. Jennifer Richard said the lack of legislation should not be a cause for concern because senators were on a retreat in Pretty Lake, Mich., where time was dedicated more toward breaking in new senators than finalizing core issues.

“People were becoming acquainted with their committees and getting the feel for things rather than pumping through legislation,” said Richard, an Education sophomore. “There are a lot of projects people are delving into, so in the coming weeks there should be an influx of bills.”

Sherry Huang and Danniele Meglen, new senators of the student services committee, said they and their committee have many ideas but want to be more familiar with ASG procedure before initiating bills.

In the absence of legislation, ASG again will dedicate the Senate meeting to welcoming fresh faces.

Mike Fong’s confirmation as student services vice president will be the most prominent position filled tonight, but several positions on the Student Activities Finance Board and the Executive Committee will be selected as well, including three non-senator spots.

“We encourage non-ASG people to show up to the meeting,” Pierson said. “Otherwise these positions will remain empty.”

SAFB has to add five account executives to the seven committee members retaining positions on the board, said Le’Jamiel Goodall, ASG financial vice president. Two of the five slots will be filled by senators. The other three will go to interested students with knowledge of the Student Activities Fee who do not necessarily have the time to be a senator, he said.

“We’re looking for freshmen and sophomores who have demonstrated interest in being on finance board and have the time to set aside or the commitment it takes to be a part of SAFB,” said Goodall, a Communication senior.

Elected students will get to work right away, Goodall said. In the next two weeks, the board will oversee audits and fall funding for student groups.

Executive Committee has three openings, one for a senator and two for students unaffiliated with ASG, said Executive Vice President Nicole Mash. This committee advises all B- and T-status student groups, lobbies for them and oversees the annual review of them.

Both Goodall and Mash said they have received several inquiries about the positions.
