Medill sophomore Becky Bowman was named editor in chief of The Summer Northwestern by the board of the Student Publishing Co. on Monday.
Bowman, an assistant editor for The Daily’s campus desk, was selected for the position over Medill sophomore Rani Gupta and Speech sophomore Adam Williams.
Medill Prof. Mary Dedinsky, chairwoman of the Students Publishing Co. board, said each of the applicants had excellent ideas for the job.
“Becky had some outstanding ideas for the freshman orientation guide and for ways to better reach readers over the summer,” Dedinsky said.
Bowman said she is looking forward to devoting her summer to making the paper a success.
“I want to stir up enthusiasm from outside our usual pool of people,” she said.
Matt Donnelly, The Daily’s editor in chief and editor of last year’s Summer Northwestern, said recruiting staff members will be Bowman’s toughest obstacle.
“The biggest challenge is attracting staff over the summer when fewer students are around,” said Donnelly, a Medill junior. “Becky is a very talented writer and editor who will attract good people to work.”
