The fencing team has not dropped a single head-to-head match at the NU Invite for the past two years.
This weekend the Wildcats will try to make it three.
Northwestern (6-0) will take on six other schools in a round-robin format Saturday and Sunday at Patten Gym.
According to head coach Laurie Schiller, the Cats’ strongest competition will come from Temple and North Carolina. Neither team has an extensive lineup of stars, Schiller said, but both are “tough and well-disciplined.”
Nevertheless, Schiller remains confident that NU can continue its unbeaten streak.
“I fully expect us to go 6-0,” he said.
The Temple match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, following matches against Lawrence and Johns Hopkins.
Temple finished ninth in the United States Fencing Coaches Association poll at the end of last season, three spots behind the Cats.
On Sunday, NU will take on Cleveland State, Fairleigh-Dickinson and finally North Carolina at 2 p.m. The Tar Heels finished 17th at the NCAA championships last year, also three spots behind the Cats. North Carolina leads the all-time series between the two teams with a 16-15 record.
