Northwestern got off to a slow start against the Nittany Lions but clawed ahead with two total touchdowns from senior quarterback Zack Oliver in relief of injured redshirt freshman starter Clayton Thorson and a kickoff return touchdown from sophomore running back Solomon Vault. But Penn State climbed back into the lead, coming back from a 20-7 deficit to take a 21-20 advantage in the fourth quarter. In the end, junior kicker Jack Mitchell atoned for two earlier misses by nailing a 35-yard kick with seconds left in the game to secure a 23-21 win for the Wildcats.
