Throughout February, Northwestern’s Multicultural Student Affairs and Department of Black Studies will host various events to honor Black History Month. Here are some of the events that NU has planned.
What’s Poppin’? “Black Faces in Virtual Spaces”
As part of a biweekly series run by Counseling and Psychological Services Staff Therapist Mikayla Wynter and Multicultural Student Affairs Assistant Director Sasha McKnight, the Black House will host a discussion of “Black Faces in Virtual Spaces” Feb. 13 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The two will explore how to “create meaningful spaces for Black voices and experiences to thrive in virtual communities.” Popcorn and other snacks will be provided.
Black Man State of Mind
The Department of Black Studies will host a roundtable discussion for Black male students Feb. 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Black House. Food will be provided.
Documentary Screening of “Stolen School”
In collaboration with the Shorefront Legacy Center, Dr. Kihana Miraya Ross and Shannon Paige Clark will host a screening of “Stolen School,” a film on the history of the desegregation of Evanston schools. The screening will take place Feb. 20 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Block Museum of Art.
Create Your Space
The Black House will host a viewing of the documentary “House Music: A Cultural Revolution” for students to learn about the history and origins of House music while creating their own scale model or diorama with provided supplies. The event will be Feb. 21 at 4 p.m.
Screening: “Hearing Silences: 50 Years of Black Women Faculty at Northwestern”
There will be a screening of “Hearing Silences: 50 Years of Black Women Faculty at Northwestern” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the McCormick Foundation Center Forum Feb. 25. The screening will follow the contributions and sacrifices of several Black women faculty members at NU over the past decades.
Skate University at The Rink
Multicultural Student Affairs and For Members Only, NU’s Black student alliance, will host a trip to The Rink, an African-American-owned skating rink in Chicago. The trip begins at 4 p.m. on Feb. 25. Free transport and dinner are included. Spots are filled, but students may join the waitlist using the link in For Members Only’s Instagram bio.
Black Stories as Black History
The Black Studies Department will host a Black Studies community storytelling event Feb. 26 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Kaplan Seminar room in Kresge Hall.
What’s Poppin’? “Comfortable in my Skin…Cozy”
Continuing the What’s Poppin’? series, the Black House will host a discussion exploring fatphobia’s intersections with racism Feb. 27 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Snacks will be provided.
