Evanston City Council will gather Monday evening to discuss Envision Evanston 2045, an amendment to an immigration ordinance and more.
With a special order of business, the council will consider an amendment to the city code’s Welcoming City Ordinance that would further exclude immigrants from federal orders to disclose their citizenship status.
The ordinance aims for Evanston to be “one of the most immigrant-friendly cities in the country,” a staff memorandum said. It prohibits city officials from participating in federal immigration enforcement and inquiring about any person’s immigration status.
The amendment proposes adjustments to the wording of the ordinance and codifies the Evanston Police Department’s current practices.
The memorandum states that the amendment is necessary to further safeguard Evanston residents from an “anticipated surge” in immigration enforcement under the Trump administration. The ordinance was first launched in 2016 ahead of Donald Trump’s first term.
Second, the council will discuss the timeline for Envision Evanston 2045, a 20-year development plan and rezoning overhaul. In recent community meetings, residents questioned the rushed nature of the plan’s adoption timeline.
