City suspends Streetplus program following physical altercation

Evanston suspended the Streetplus program after releasing security footage of a physical altercation Monday at Fountain Square, according to a news release.

The camera footage shows Streetplus staff making verbal contact with an individual allegedly urinating on a utility box. The contact then escalated into a physical altercation. The footage did not contain audio and lasted less than five minutes.

The Evanston Streetplus program started in September after receiving a half-million-dollar contract from the city. The program’s staff members are responsible for cleaning, maintenance and landscaping in the city’s retail areas.

According to the news release, Streetplus staff’s actions “are not in line with the city’s values.” City officials are still investigating this incident.
