Former presidential candidate and entrepreneur Andrew Yang is Northwestern College Democrats’ fall speaker, the organization announced in a Thursday release.

Yang will speak at Cahn Auditorium on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. Tickets are free, but students must register in advance via a link that will be sent out shortly.

Yang’s 2020 campaign was built upon mathematics and economics. His most well-known policy was his proposed universal basic income program that would give $1,000 per month to every American adult.

Yang’s campaign exceeded expectations for a political outsider — he raised more than $30 million over the course of the campaign. But he lost momentum as the race went on, eventually withdrawing his candidacy in early February 2020. He also ran in the 2021 Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, but was ultimately unsuccessful. A few days ago, Yang announced he left the Democratic Party and is now registered as an independent.

Northwestern College Democrats’ recent speakers have included Julián Castro, Stacey Abrams and Charles Booker.
