Evanston is holding its first Juneteenth parade this year, after residents including Hendricks pushed the city for an inclusive alternative to the Fourth of July parade. Alderman Robin Rue Simmons (5th) will serve as Grand Marshall. Juneteenth honors the true end of slavery in 1865, when Union soldiers ordered the last slaves in Texas to be freed. Hendricks and Chicago-based choreographer Dani Jo Williams are organizing a dance group for black youth ages eight to 16 to perform during the parade on June 20.
