Police arrested a 20-year-old man on Tuesday in connection with unlawful use of a weapon.

Officers were on patrol at about 11:55 p.m. near the 1600 block of Foster Street when they spotted a person walking on the sidewalk who looked like he was under 17 years of age, Evanston police Cmdr. Ryan Glew said. Officers stopped the 20-year-old Evanston resident on suspicion of a curfew violation.

Officers attempted to conduct a pat-down of the man, Glew said. The man then fled from the officers on foot. After a short foot chase, the man slipped and fell on the sidewalk.

When officers reached the man and lifted him off the ground, they discovered a .25-caliber handgun lying under him, Glew said. The gun was loaded and had a round in the chamber, according to a news release. The man admitted to police that the gun belonged to him.

Police charged the man with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

The man’s court date and bond amount are pending.
