State Sen. Daniel Biss (D-Evanston) announced Tom Elliott — a former official on Chicago Ald. Ameya Pawar’s (47th) campaign — as his new communications director on Friday.

“We’re tremendously lucky to have Tom join the campaign,” Biss said in a news release. “This election is an opportunity to build a state that works for us, on Election Day and beyond. With his track record of organizing communities around progressive values, Tom is perfectly suited to amplify our message and inspire voters to take action.”

Prior to his commitment to the Biss campaign team, Elliott served as communications director for Pawar’s campaign. Pawar dropped his bid for Illinois governor earlier this month due to a lack of funds.

Pawar said his campaign had raised $828,000, but that proved insufficient to broaden the reach of his campaign statewide. Without the resources, he said the campaign could only be expanded if staff were cut or he took on more personal debt.

Elliott said in the news release that he is “proud” to join Biss’s campaign, which promotes a progressive platform by supporting a progressive income tax, free college tuition and statewide Medicare.

“Daniel and (his running mate) are the only candidates in this race I trust to build a state that works for middle-class and working people rather than billionaires and special interests,” Elliott said.
