The 2017 Homecoming Parade was canceled due to ongoing construction on Sheridan Road, according to a Monday news release.

The parade, an annual Homecoming week tradition, usually runs along Sheridan Road from Lincoln Street to Chicago Avenue. However, that stretch is currently under construction as part of a project that will extend a protected bike lane, improve traffic signals, resurface pavement and create a new curb.

No alternative event is scheduled to replace the parade time slot, the release said. However, other Homecoming events will continue as planned Oct. 1-7, including the Color Roar and PurplePalooza Carnival at Deering Meadow.

The Northwestern University Marching Band, football coach Pat Fitzgerald and University President Morton Schapiro will all appear at the pep rally on Oct. 6, which traditionally follows the parade.

The Homecoming game against Penn State will take place Oct. 7.
