A 49-year-old Evanston woman found her home in south Evanston burglarized after returning from vacation Monday.

The woman left for vacation April 26, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. When she returned, two televisions, two watches, perfume, an Amazon Fire TV Stick and a pillowcase were taken from her home in the 700 block of Mulford Street.

Dugan said the suspect gained entrance through a closed but unlocked window. He added that the total value of items stolen is $2,000, and the case has been assigned to detectives for follow up.

Evanston man charged with unlawful possession of controlled substance

Officers found a plastic bag that tested positive for heroin in a man’s backpack Tuesday in west Evanston.

At around 5:50 p.m., officers observed the man riding a bicycle erratically in a traffic lane. The officers stopped him to speak with him in the 1800 block of Dodge Avenue, Dugan said, and the man removed a small, plastic bag from his pocket and threw it to the ground.

The officers retrieved the bag, and the contents tested positive for heroin, Dugan said. The man was taken into custody and charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a felony.
