Police blotter: Hair extensions stolen from Howard Beauty Supplies

Ben Winck, Assistant City Editor

Police are investigating a case of retail theft at a beauty salon in south Evanston on Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were dispatched to Howard Beauty Supply, in the 1100 block of Howard Street at about 3 p.m. after the store’s owner reported four women entered the store, removed hair extensions from a display and fled in a grey Toyota without paying, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said.

The extensions were valued at more than $200, and the store owner witnessed a man drive the subjects eastbound on Howard Street after they had left the store. The store owner was able to get the car’s license plate.

The crime is a misdemeanor, and detectives are using video of the incident to follow up on the case, Dugan said.

Officers are investigating a long scratch found on the side of a vehicle parked in downtown Evanston.

A 45-year-old Evanston resident parked her car on the block at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday before returning at 9 p.m. to find a scratch extending along the driver side of her 2014 Range Rover. No witnesses were present, but video surveillance has been turned over to detectives.

The charge will depend on the cost to repair the damage made to the car, Dugan said.
