Brown University administrator Jabbar Bennett has been named associate provost for diversity and inclusion, becoming the first to hold the position at NU.
Bennett will join NU Oct. 1 and currently serves as associate dean of the graduate school, associate dean for diversity and director of the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs at Brown.
“Jabbar Bennett’s experience will build on the University’s current efforts to increase and support faculty, staff, students and alumni diversity, while also creating new initiatives to make Northwestern a leader in this arena,” said Provost Dan Linzer in a news release.
Bennett will report to Linzer in his new role.
In his new position, Bennett, who will also be an associate professor of medicine at NU, will chair NU’s Diversity Council, which addresses diversity and inclusion issues across the university. The council oversees five working groups: Academics/Education, Faculty Recruitment and Retention, Campus Life, Pipeline, and Lifetime Connections. Bennett will also be the senior administrator in charge of leading efforts to create a welcoming environment for students, staff and faculty.
In his current role at Brown, Bennett works with faculty and staff across more than 100 departments on issues of recruitment, retention, progression and inclusion of underrepresented community members. He also coordinates with national organizations to increase representation of minorities in graduate and medical education.
Correction: A previous version of this article misstated Bennett’s start date as associate provost. Bennett will start Oct. 1. The Daily regrets the error.
