Police Blotter: Fingerprints lead to arrest of 2012 burglar

A 20-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection with a residential burglary from almost three years ago after police confirmed fingerprint evidence identifying him.

Paul Richard Downs, a Chicago resident, was charged with a burglary from Aug. 30, 2012 in the 1500 block of Seward Street in which a female resident of the home caught the man in the process of stealing items such as an iPod, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. The man fled the home without any stolen items.

The police department received fingerprint results from the Illinois State Police Crime Laboratory in late February and the resident of the home later confirmed Downs as the burglar. Dugan said since this incident, the department began paying for service from a different crime lab, transitioning last year from the state crime lab due to delays in forensic results.

Man robbed by known acquaintances in south Evanston

A 19-year-old man was robbed Sunday in south Evanston by two men from whom he intended to purchase a phone charger.

The Evanston resident met the men, both 19 years old, in the 1300 block of Dodge Avenue at about 2:30 p.m. to receive the $10 phone charger when they robbed him, Dugan said. The man told police that one of the men punched him in the face before the other removed $50 from his pants pocket.

The man suffered a cut inside his lip but refused medical treatment, Dugan said.
