A 21-year-old Evanston man was arrested Tuesday after admitting to shaking his infant daughter, who is currently in the hospital in critical condition, police said.

Staff from Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago contacted the Evanston Police Department at 4:30 a.m. Sunday to report the potential abuse of the 24-day-old infant after they found her injuries inconsistent with the father’s initial account.

Carlos Jaimes, of the 100 block of Ashland Ave., responded to an investigation by the Evanston Police Juvenile Bureau by admitting to holding the infant around her midsection and shaking her in an attempt to stop her from crying.

Jaimes was charged with one count of aggravated battery to an infant child.

The infant is expected to survive her injuries.
