Nicor to begin gas main replacements in south Evanston

Ben Schaefer, Assistant City Editor

Nicor Gas, in cooperation with subcontractors, will soon begin preliminary work on gas main and equipment replacements in south Evanston.

Work will take place in the area contained by Main Street, Asbury Avenue, Oakton Street and Dodge Avenue, the city announced Monday.

United Meters Inc., one of the subcontractors, will begin confirming the location of all gas service and meter sites for both businesses and residences on Feb. 9.

NPL Construction, the other subcontractor, will replace approximately 22,000 feet of cast iron gas main with plastic pipe gas main to increase pressure capacity. NPL will also replace 500 gas service lines, including new gas meters and regulators, according to a city news release. Construction will begin Monday, April 6 and is projected to last until Aug. 31.

To prevent potential property damage, residents with private utility lines are responsible for locating and marking the utilities before construction begins, according to the city.

Restoration work on any pavement and landscaping displaced during construction will be completed on a continuous basis throughout the duration of the project, according to the city.

Construction crews will work from Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Parking restrictions will be placed as needed, according to a news release.
