Dolphin Show announces ‘Titanic’ as 2015 musical

The Dolphin Show team announced earlier this month it will be producing “Titanic” as its 2015 musical.

The Dolphin Show is the nation’s largest student-produced musical. “Titanic” marks the team’s 73rd annual production and will run during Winter Quarter in Cahn Auditorium.

Brendan Flynn, the director for the show, said he is particularly excited because the show is such a large scale production.

“There’s something special about an epic musical in a large space that’s very unique to musical theater and is kind of unique to that style,” the rising Communication senior said. “That’s extremely exciting to me.”

Flynn worked with Jack Eidson, the artistic producer, and Isabel Garcia, the business producer, to put together a list of potential musicals to present to the Northwestern Student Theatre Coalition executive board.

Eidson, a rising Communication senior, said the team initially made a list of about 60 musicals, which were narrowed down based on different qualities, such as the scale of the musical, style of music and the types of actors it required. The team applied for rights to its top 10 musical picks.

“Over the past few years, Dolphin Show producers have had a really hard time getting rights to shows,” Eidson said. “Because Cahn is such a big space, we’re actually competing with lots of professional companies in the area for rights. … Luckily, we got the rights to pretty much all of our top choice shows.”

After getting additional feedback from the design team, they presented their top three picks to the StuCo executive board and ultimately decided on “Titanic.”

The musical opened on Broadway in 1997, the same year film director James Cameron released his movie of the same name, but Flynn said the musical tells a different story.

“It is a story that we all know and we have that basis of the Titanic, but it’s kind of been interesting and exciting talking about that and seeing who knows the show and who only recognizes the name,” he said.

Flynn said the show is a perfect fit for what the Dolphin Show team was looking for.

“(“Titanic”) is so much about mankind building this monumental idol to its success and competence, and it’s really cool, the idea of us students coming together to also build such a large and big idea and concept and put it out there for people the same way,” he said. “After hearing (“Titanic”) and thinking about what the show really was about, it really reflected what we kind of wanted to do for the Dolphin community, which was a feat of getting everyone involved.”
