A Chicago man has been charged with five felonies in connection with a botched drug deal that turned into a car chase in Evanston, police said this afternoon.

Louis Buford, 32, was ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bail this morning, police said. Buford, of the 8400 block of South Hermitage Avenue, was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after an armed robbery call resulted in the recovery of a handgun, crack cocaine and more than $1,000.

While responding to the call, officers noticed a vehicle matching the caller’s description near the intersection of Main Street and Ridge Avenue, police said. The officers tried to stop the car, but it sped off and crashed into several other vehicles in the 1700 block of Main Street.

Police are still looking for the driver, who fled after the car chase.

Buford has been charged with being an armed habitual offender, armed violence, unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He is scheduled to appear in court again Jan. 7.
