Updated: Man fatally shot in west Evanston

An Evanston man was shot to death Saturday evening on the city’s west side, according to police.

Floyd Gibert, 30, was shot at about 6:20 p.m. in the 2000 block of Darrow Avenue, Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said.

Gibert, of the 2000 block of Ashland Avenue, was taken to Evanston Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy performed this afternoon found he died from a gunshot wound to the chest and ruled his death a homicide.

After the shooting, a car crash happened near the intersection of Green Bay Road and McCormick Boulevard, Parrott said. Police believe another person was trying to take Gibert to the hospital before the accident.

Gibert was on parole when he died, Parrott said. Gibert was arrested in February 2012 on suspicion of possession of cannabis. At the time, police listed his address as 4831 Conrad St. in Skokie.

The shooting occurred less than a mile from the Northwestern campus.

Evanston police are investigating.
