Medill junior Paulina Firozi named next editor in chief of The Daily

Medill junior Paulina Firozi will serve as the next editor in chief of The Daily, the paper’s publisher announced tonight.

Firozi will lead the paper starting Winter Quarter and will serve through Spring Quarter. She will succeed current editor in chief Michele Corriston, a Medill senior.

“I was so thrilled when it became official that Paulina would be the next editor in chief,” Corriston said. “The Daily couldn’t be in better hands.”

Firozi said she has worked closely with Corriston since she first started writing for The Daily.

“Now that I have to look forward, I really appreciate how closely I got to work with Michele this quarter,” Firozi said. “Getting to work with her as a managing editor in her final quarter as EIC showed me all the great things she has done. I hope to emulate a lot of the things she did as a leader.”

Firozi is currently serving in her second term as The Daily’s managing editor. She previously worked as development and recruitment editor, campus editor and assistant campus editor.

Moving ahead, Firozi said she wants to bring a “Web-first mentality” to the publication.

Students Publishing Co., Inc., board chairman Charles Yarnoff said Firozi’s ideas about how to improve The Daily’s website were what “most impressed” the board in her interview.

“She conveyed a lot of energy and enthusiasm,” Yarnoff said. “She has interesting ideas for improving the work flow so that stories get up very quickly on the online version of The Daily.”

Firozi said one of her goals during her remaining time with the paper will be to explore “how we can make it grow for future generations of journalism nerds that walk through these doors.”

“I walked in the first week during Wildcat Welcome and I was so in awe of the people working at The Daily,” Firozi said. “I thought they were so great at what they did, and now being in their position not even three years later is kind of surreal.”
