Street Style: Staying warm

Infinity scarves can keep you warm during the transition between fall and winter.

It’s Evanston, it’s October and it’s cold — progressively more so as the month goes on. How can you combat this? Let’s talk about keeping warm.

There are a few easy changes to make your dressing habits more cold weather-conscious.

The first is layering. It makes logical sense that the more layers of clothing you have on, the warmer you’ll be. You can do the “layered look” and be super chic. For simple, understated layering, try wearing tights under your pants or a tank under your shirt. A jacket over a sweater over a cardigan may be a little ridiculous, but as long as you keep them all in the same color scheme, it’s not too crazy. For more tips on how to layer, check out Kendall Siewert’s column.

The second is investing in a good, warm fall jacket. Look for something with an inner lining — quilted is always a safe bet. If you feel hot putting it on in the air-conditioned store, it’ll probably work.

The third is warm socks. Fuzzy socks or knee-highs folded over will keep your toesies and ankles warm.

The last is covering up any other part of your body the cold air can infiltrate. Scarves and gloves will keep your neck and hands warm. Scarves can be super chic, especially infinity scarves. I’d recommend a thick, knitted one that will keep you warm and stylin’. Heather grey and combat green are very “in” and will match with most outfits. A thin scarf is great style-wise, but probably won’t protect you from the cold. As far as gloves go, save the mittens and thick fleece-lined gloves until it drops below freezing. Stick with thin to medium-thickness cotton gloves or buy a jacket with warm pockets.

Hopefully these easy tips will help you brave the cold Illinois fall weather.
