Updated: Man steals incoming freshman’s cell phone on campus

A man snatched an incoming freshman’s cell phone out of her hand Sunday night near Cahn Auditorium, officials said.

The 17-year-old girl from Maryland was walking at about 8:25 p.m. on Emerson Street near Sheridan Road when she was approached by two men who were heading in the opposite direction, according to Evanston police and a University security alert. One of the men grabbed her phone and ran away.

The student was not hurt, according to the alert. The men did not say anything or show a weapon.

Evanston and University police were unable to locate the men.

The alert described both men as black with medium builds, in their early 20s, and between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. One man was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, and the other a burgundy hooded sweatshirt.

Evanston police are investigating the incident.
