A man died Sunday night after falling on the electrified third rail at the CTA station on Howard Street, officials said. The El stop is near the Chicago-Evanston border.

An apparently drunk man died early this morning after falling down the stairs at the CTA station on Howard Street, the Chicago Police Department said.

Keith Anderson of the 1400 block of South Canal Street in Chicago hit his head while tumbling down some steps at the Howard Red Line stop, CPD spokesman Veejay Zala said.

Anderson, 41, was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:10 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled an accident with chronic alcoholism as a contributing factor.

Anderson was partially undressed and smelled of urine when station workers found him and called the cops about 2:30 a.m., according to authorities.

Zala said a death investigation is underway. A spokesperson for the Chicago Transit Authority said the agency will turn over video surveillance from the Purple Line’s southern terminus, which is about three miles south of Northwestern’s Evanston campus.
