Locker theft latest in trend

Someone took more than $500 worth of items Friday from a locker in LA Fitness, 1618 Sherman Ave.

A Chicago resident put his possessions in a gym locker prior to working out, and when he returned, he realized the locker had been broken into, Evanston Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Jay Parrott said. The contents, including a wallet, several credit cards and a BlackBerry cell phone, were removed from the locker.

“There have been a dozen (locker thefts) since the first of the year,” Parrott said. “We have an ongoing theft problem.”

Police alerted to potential gang activity

EPD officers received an anonymous call Friday warning police about six people possessing guns in the 1200 block of Hartrey Avenue.

When police arrived on the scene, several people were running from the area, Parrott said.

Although a couple of individuals were stopped by police, they were not arrested because neither contraband nor weapons were recovered from them. No shots were fired.

EPD officers “believe it to be a gang-related incident,” Parrott said.
