Car accident near Blomquist injures 2 Northwestern students

A member of the Northwestern University Police Department, who declined to give his name, confirmed at about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday an “auto accident” had occurred that night near Blomquist Recreation Center, 617 Foster St. He declined to give any more information because the situation was still under investigation.

According to Jenna McNaney, a Blomquist monitor working at the gym’s front desk at the time, two females left the scene in an ambulance following the incident. They were not in a vehicle when hit. McNaney, a Communication sophomore, said the victims were conscious and had been bleeding when they were transported on stretchers. They were also wearing neck braces and seemed to be “shocked.”

“One of them was cut up pretty bad. A lot of her hair was out,” McNaney said. “They were cut, but it was just like a cut on the first layer of the skin. One of the girls, her hands were bloody too. By no means were they dripping blood or anything.”

Although McNaney did not see the accident herself, she said a witness on the scene alerted her to the incident. That witness called an ambulance while McNaney went outside to assist the victims, who were sitting on a “ramp in the rain.”

She said both victims were able to speak.

“One girl kept saying it was a really messed-up thing,” McNaney said.

When emergency responders arrived on the scene, they “ran some tests” and put the injured parties on stretchers, McNaney said.

Around 10:45 p.m., there were three UP cars outside Blomquist; two were on Foster Street, and one was in an alley to the east of the building. Blomquist remained open until its typical closing time of 11 p.m.

One Evanston Police Department car arrived around 11 p.m. It is unclear whether Evanston police had previously been on the scene.

Police officers appeared to be examining two white vans parked on Foster Street slightly east of Blomquist’s main entrance. They were also seen speaking with several people wearing jackets with the same logo as was on the side of the vans. All of those people drove themselves away from the scene by 11:20 p.m.

No one at the scene identified the two injured parties. When called at 10:45 p.m., a representative from UP said she “could not confirm” that an incident had occurred.

Police on the scene said more information would be available when UP Deputy Police Chief Daniel McAleer could be reached.
