The city shut off water on the 800 block of Church Street for about an hour on Tuesday after water lines burst. Water and silt flooded the streets as workers attempted to control the situation.
Tim Bartus, distribution supervisor with Evanston’s utilities department, said construction workers were digging beneath the AT&T and ComEd ducts in the street when nearby water lines broke.
“We were replacing this fire hydrant which had given us trouble in the past, and then it broke again,” Bartus said.
A city news release issued Monday said there would be no water from Monday to Wednesday between 1 and 5 a.m. due to water main work. After the water lines burst Tuesday, water was again shut off from 3 to 4 p.m.
Employees at Art and Science Salon, 811 Church St., had to buy bottles of water to wash the color out of clients’ hair when the water supply stopped, manager LaRae Hilty said.
Hilty maintained the “emergency situation” hardly affected business.
“It’s definitely been worse when they’ve told us last minute, and we’ve been busy with a lot of clients,” said Hilty, referring to a situation this summer when the salon also lost its water supply unexpectedly.
Bartus said water will be shut off again at 1 a.m. Wednesday for construction.
