Huffington Post recognizes Evanston cuisine

Fresh. Simple. Delicious.

These are the three words rising Weinberg junior Joey Samuels uses to describe the food at Al’s Deli.

“I go every Saturday and get the same thing: a smoked turkey with aioli sandwich, a bowl of their tomato soup and a sugar cookie,” the loyal customer said. “You have to get the cookie.”

Like Samuels, many Evanston residents and Northwestern students have favorite restaurants in Evanston. In fact, the Huffington Post Food named Evanston one of nine “great small food towns” in America.

According to the article, “Evanston has charm that fuses old-fashioned American kitsch with a young creative spirit.”

Rising Communication senior Lauren Wiefels could not agree more.

“I can’t think of a place in Evanston where I have found just one restaurant that has an eclectic mixture of things,” she said. “Like Bat 17, it has sandwiches, salads and soups. It is bar food to the next level.”

Nora Gannon, a waitress at Bat 17, said every night she sees a familiar face.

“There are tons of regulars that come in,” she said. “With the Northwestern crowd, it is the food that draws them in. But for the non-Northwestern crowd it is definitely the staff.”

According to Gannon, regulars will often come in and ask for a certain waiter or waitress.

“The staff totally contributes to the experience,” she said. “There are a lot of guys that have been there for a long time. Everyone has a lot of personality, and that has made the restaurant more familiar and a staple over the past few years.”

In addition to Bat 17 and Al’s Deli, the Huffington Post also listed Edzo’s Burgers and Dixie Kitchen as great local places to eat.

“I am obsessed with Edzo’s for many reasons,” said Ellie Levine, an Evanston resident and rising Weinberg junior. “They have a variety of different fries and burgers. But personally, I just think it is exceptionally good.”

Levine said she once ate at Edzo’s three times in one month.

“Yes, it is definitely one of the regular spots I would go to,” she said while laughing.
