Schapiro absent from MLK festivities due to mother’s death

University President Morton Schapiro was unable to attend Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day festivities because of the death of his mother, officials said.

Jeanette Schapiro died Saturday in Cranford, N.J,, according to an obituary published in The Star-Ledger of Newark. She was 87.

Services were held Monday.

Jeanette Schapiro was an office manager for many years before her retirement. She lived in various cities in New Jersey as well as Williamstown, Mass., during her lifetime.

University Provost Daniel Linzer announced the death and President Schapiro’s absence at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration held Monday in Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, , 50 Arts Circle Drive.

President Schapiro will likely return to campus Tuesday, University spokesman Al Cubbage said.
