Northwestern announces new dean of Qatar campus

Scholar, author and educator Everette Dennis has been named the new dean of Northwestern in Qatar.

Dennis is “widely recognized in the fields of communication and journalism, and more broadly within higher education,” according to a news release from University Provost Daniel Linzer.

Dennis currently serves at Fordham University Business School as the Felix E. Larkin Distinguished Professor, chairperson of Communication and Media Management and director for the Center for Communications.

He is also the executive director of the International Longevity Center-USA and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

He has authored, co-authored and edited several books on journalism and media.

“Building on NU-Q’s fine beginnings, my goal and that of the NU-Q community is to contribute to the transformation of communication and media in what is now a digital and global world,” Dennis wrote in a statement. “The critical task is to inspire and nurture the best possible talent for the present and future.”

Dennis said he will focus on building relationships between the school and communications organizations, businesses, government entities and non-governmental organizations, both inside and outside Qatar.

He says the NU-Q program is a “world-class collaboration.”

“It’ll be the adventure of a lifetime” Dennis said.

Dennis succeeds Dean John Margolis, who has served since Northwestern in Qatar began in 2007.

Dennis will take office June 1.

Dennis’ other experience includes:

  • Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon
  • Director of Graduate Studies in Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Minnesota
  • Founding director of the Media Studies Center at Columbia University
  • Senior vice president of the Gannet and Freedom Forum foundations
  • Founding president of the American Academy in Berlin
  • Trustee at the International Institute of Communications and International Center for Journalists
  • Executive director of the International University Consortium for Freedom Forum
