NUHCR’s first lecture of the series “Why does it matter, NU?”

Kathy Kelly and Mohamed Abdel-Magid, of the Chicago-based campaign Voices for Creative Nonviolence, will be the first to respond to the Northwestern University Conference on Human Rights’ fall series “Why does it matter, NU?” Sunday from 4-6 p.m. in the McCormick Auditorium.

The lecture is titled “Building a better world: Our Urgent Mandate.” NUCHR is collaborating with the Global Engagement Summit and GlobeMed to bring the speakers to Northwestern.

Voices for Creative Nonviolence is a campaign to end U.S. military and economic warfare.

Kelly is co-coordinator for the campaign. She has spent extensive time in the Middle East throughout the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including a stay in Baghdad during the 2003 “Shock and Awe” bombing.

She has also taught in Chicago-area high schools and community colleges since 1974.

Abdel-Magid joined Voices for Creative Nonviolence in January 2010 after graduating from the University of Minnesota. He is originally from Sudan.
