Video: NU alum discusses latest film

The Block Cinema hosted a screening Tuesday of the new Warner Brothers film “Life as We Know It,” directed by filmmaker and Northwestern alum Greg Berlanti.

The romantic comedy pokes fun at the struggles of married life with children. Some students said that it reflects a certain sincerity that most films of this genre tend to ignore. The film stars Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel.

Berlanti studied writing and theatre at Northwestern. After graduating he became a writer and producer on the hit show Dawson’s Creek and its spin-off Young Americans.

He is best known for spearheading the creation of TV show Everwood. He also wrote and directed the independent film Broken Hearts Club featuring gay friends in West Hollywood which was based on his own circle of friends. Berlanti is also the writer/producer of the upcoming and much anticipated Green Lantern film, expected out in 2011.

Following the movie there was a question and answer session with the director. Students asked questions ranging from specifics about the film to dealing with hardships after college. Berlanti provided students with answers that emphasized the importance of helping others rather than focusing on the self in order to succeed.
