Q&A: Freshman multi-sport star Arby Fields enjoys success on diamond, gridiron

Freshman Arby Fields ventured to Northwestern from sunny Alta Loma, Calif., where he was a captain for both the football and baseball teams at Los Osos High School. In June 2009, Fields was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft but came to NU to play as a dual-sport athlete instead. On the gridiron, the 5-foot-9, 200-pounder played in all 13 games of the Wildcats’ 2009 campaign, with three starts, where he led running backs with 302 yards and five rushing touchdowns. On the diamond, the freshman is the Cats’ starting centerfielder and leadoff hitter. The Daily’s Christine Todd spoke with Fields at a recent practice. Daily: What’s your favorite movie?Fields: “Remember the Titans.” First of all, it’s because Denzel Washington is my favorite actor. And I love football. It’s just a movie I can watch over and over and over and it doesn’t get old. Daily: What’s your favorite song to listen to before games?Fields: “Pursuit of Happiness” by Kid Cudi. It’s a good song, it’s a feel-good song, and it puts me in a good mood every time I listen to it, before every game. Daily: How do you feel about the spring weather after those long winter months in Evanston? Fields: With the sky being blue for once and the sun being out, this kind of reminds me of home; it’s what I’m used to. I like it, I like it a lot. Daily: Growing up in California, you were surrounded by plenty of sports teams. Which ones are your favorites? Fields: I’m a Dodgers fan. I like the Dodgers and the Angels. I know it’s kind of like, “How can you like both?” But I have favorite players on both teams. I grew up going to Angels and Dodgers games all my life. And then I fell in love with the San Diego Chargers when I was six years old. My cousin was playing corner for them, so I used to go to the games all the time. Ever since then, I’ve been a big Chargers fan. Daily: Who is your cousin?Fields: Darryll Lewis. He played corner for them, so I got to go into the locker rooms and stuff like that. Daily: Going back to baseball, who are your favorite players on the Angels and Dodgers?Fields: My favorite player on the Angels was Chone Figgins, (but he left via free agency and signed with the Seattle Mariners). That was really disappointing to me. But my favorite player on the Dodgers is Manny Ramirez. I like the way he hits, and I just love everything about him. Daily: Who do you consider your biggest role model?Fields: Bo Jackson (who played running back for the Oakland Raiders and left field/designated hitter for the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox and California Angels in the late ’80s and early ’90s). I’ve been reading books on him, especially playing two sports. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I just idolize the guy. Daily: What’s been your favorite class at NU so far? Fields: Anthropology of Myth and Symbolism, I’d have to say, has been my favorite class. It was interesting. Daily: If you could have a meal with one person, any person in the world, who would it be? Fields: Reggie Bush (running back for the New Orleans Saints). I like him, I just grew up going to USC games, watching him. I’ve seen him in high school, especially not being too far away from me. I feel like he’s done so much, and I just love the way he plays. That’s just my favorite person in the world.[email protected]
