Vaccination clinics are cancelled due to late shipment of vaccines

The City of Evanston cancelled its second round of public swine flu vaccination clinics scheduled for Nov. 14 and Nov. 15, according to the city’s Web site. The H1N1 clinics were cancelled because the city had not received a second vaccine shipment from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The city received an initial shipment of 5,000 doses of the injectable vaccine and 5,000 doses of the nasal spray vaccine in late October. Health and Human Services had originally expected to receive its first shipment of the vaccines in mid-October.

In the first round of public clinics held on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8, vaccines were given only to groups identified as having a high risk of contracting swine flu. These groups included pregnant women, students, and caretakers and parents of young children.

“The categories that have been specified as priority groups are those people that need to get the shot to avoid any kind of major illness,” Ald. Delores Holmes (5th) said.

Evonda Thomas, director of the city’s Department of Health and Human Services, said she expected Evanston to receive enough vaccines to accommodate the city’s at-risk residents. In an interview with The Daily two weeks ago, Thomas said future clinics and distribution of vaccines for other residents would depend on the vaccine’s availability.

“I’ve heard good things,” Holmes said about the city’s first public clinics, adding that she hopes more people will be able to receive the vaccination soon.

According to the city’s Web site, the school-based clinics at Haven Middle School, 2417 Prairie Ave., and Kingsley Elementary, 2300 Green Bay Rd., will still be held Monday.

Northwestern will host free swine flu vaccinations at Norris University Center and Patten Gym from Nov. 17 to 19 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for faculty and students with WildCARDs.
