Letter: Suspect details crucial for personal security

Suspect details crucial for personal security

As a female member of our Northwestern community, I am troubled by the recent increase in crime, especially the sexual assault in Tech. I am encouraged by the steps the University has taken to better protect students. However, personal responsibility is the first, best and oftentimes only defense against crime. Being aware of your surroundings, not walking alone at night, carrying protection, staying alert and avoiding threats are simple actions that, when negligently not taken, endanger the individual. Disseminating information regarding crimes and suspects enables students to keep safe. Race is a very identifying physical characteristic, and as such should be a part of a crime report. Megan’s Law, our nation’s anti-sexual offense legislation, publishes on its Web site the ethnicity of all sex offenders. This law recognizes I need a description of the suspect’s physical appearance to best protect myself. Withholding identifying information such as race in order not to disturb sensibilities jeopardizes all NU students. That people are more concerned about stereotyping than our safety is outrageous.– Rebecca PenskarMcCormick junior
