Editorial: Campus safety needs new look

Your 5 a.m. e-mail told you: This week marked yet another incident of violence on campus. This time it involved sexual abuse that occurred in a well-lit indoor hallway of Tech, early enough in the evening for other students to still be around.

We expect to feel pretty safe on campus. We walk into Tech or Kresge without the fear of becoming a victim of anything but a fatal midterm. This incident was a bit of a wake-up call. It’s essential to keep school buildings open after hours for a variety of reasons, including graduate research, evening events and access to computers with special software. But for added security in certain music buildings on campus, students have their WildCARDs coded to allow access. Similarly, requiring a swiped entry from students, faculty or staff to get into Tech or other popular late-night academic stops would help deter on-campus crime.

Community Service Officers have already proved their worth in NU dorms. With an increased police presence at Tech immediately following the abuse, the administration may consider adding more CSOs to patrol areas like Tech. It’s pretty comforting just to see security personnel stationed in the most colossal building on campus.

A complementary idea could be to have the NU Police Department complete more rounds on foot around campus. Covering pedestrian paths would promote a more active sense of security on campus for late-night studyers.

On the grounds of a private university, we should be able to work in classroom buildings after dark without constantly looking over our shoulders.
