Evanston Civic Center to be renamed after former mayor Morton

A short ceremony preceding Monday’s Evanston City Council meeting will formally rededicate the Evanston Civic Center as the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.

The old council voted to rename the Civic Center at their final meeting in May. The vote was unanimous and part of a night of accolades and symbolic motions of congratulations.

Lorraine Morton served as mayor from 1993-2009. She also served nine years as the 5th Ward’s alderman and was the principal at Haven Middle School. Morton, who got a masters degree from Northwestern’s School of Education and Social Policy, was Evanston’s first black mayor, as well as the first democrat elected to be the city’s executive. She won reelection for the mayor’s office three times, running unopposed twice.

The rededication ceremony will be held at 8:10 p.m., and will be attended by Evanston’s elected officials and special guests.
