As a member of the Northwestern debate team, I was pleased to see the positive headlines (“For debate team, hard work leads to top national ranking,” Oct. 30). However, I object to a statement by my former teammate that our coaches are not helpful. Having not debated in national tournaments during high school, it was a relief to have smart coaches around me who could help me with the transition, whether with writing arguments or speaking style.
I am a better debater now than when I came here because of the lengths the team has gone to, to help me improve. Our motto is not “win as a team, lose as a team” for nothing. Is it hard work? Oh boy, yes it is. But when you actually give it your all, you can understand why you’re here.
