Women’s basketball coach resigns

Changes are on the horizon for one of Northwestern’s two basketball programs.

Wildcats women’s basketball coach Beth Combs is calling it quits. Athletic Director Jim Phillips announced the resignation Wednesday afternoon, citing her pursuit of other personal and professional opportunities.

“Four years ago, I had the honor of being named the head women’s basketball coach at Northwestern,” Combs said in a statement. “Today, I resign from my position knowing that I am leaving this program in a better place. I thank Mark Murphy and Henry Bienen for their trust and faith in me. I thank everyone who worked so hard everyday to make our program better, and I also want to thank Jim Phillips for his support in my decision.”

Combs leaves after four seasons in Evanston, where she posted a 24-95 overall record, and a 7-59 mark in Big Ten conference play. Her 2007-08 season saw NU go 5-26, 1-17 in the Big Ten.
