Solution to Norris lies in a different location
I absolutely agree with the general gist of the editorial regarding Norris printed on Monday. It isn’t necessary for me to reiterate the numerous problems with our current student center. However, I think the sole focus on Norris itself ignores several key questions. Why is one of the most prime pieces of property on the entire Evanston campus – the Garrett lot – currently an ugly, flat parking lot? Why does a new student center have to be on the same parcel where Norris is currently situated? And aren’t there any other academic or administrative uses that Norris can be converted into instead of paying for the enormous tear-down costs? While I will be graduating in June, I certainly believe that a new student center that corrects the pitfalls of Norris built squarely on what is now the Garrett lot (or some comparable location) would be very beneficial to campus and the Northwestern community. I also doubt that I’m alone in my thoughts.
