D65 board members contest upcoming academic calendar

Evanston/Skokie School District 65 board members and parents criticized the number of early release and teacher training days scheduled for the 2008-09 school year at the District 65 regular board meeting Tuesday.

The district proposed nine “professional development days,” during which teachers will be trained in instructional practices, curriculum, technology and leadership. During these days, students are released earlier than usual. Currently, there are five professional development days built into the school calendar.

“The more days we have for professional development, the greater we enhance our chances of student achievement,” District 65 Superintendant Hardy Murphy said at the meeting held at the Joseph E. Hill Education Center, 1500 McDaniel Ave.

But the plan was contested by board members and parents, who are already displeased with the schedule
