Softball: NU softball beats two teams ranked in top 3

No. 6 Northwestern opened its season with wins over No. 1 Arizona and No. 3 Texas A&M en route to a perfect 4-0 record in the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., over the weekend.

After rain postponed Friday’s games, NU knocked off Arizona 8-5 Saturday for the program’s first win over a top-ranked team since the Cats beat UCLA on March 26, 2006. Arizona beat NU in the final round of the 2006 Women’s College World Series.

The Cats took an 8-4 lead over the Aggies on Friday before the game was stopped due to rain. When play resumed Sunday, they hung on for an 8-7 victory.

NU also beat Idaho State and Nebraska.

Read tomorrow’s Daily for a longer recap of the opening weekend action of the softball and women’s lacrosse teams.
