Three men rob student walking west of campus

A Northwestern student was robbed at the corner of Church Street and Maple Avenue about 1:45 a.m. Sunday, Vice President of University Relations Alan Cubbage said.

The student was approached by three black men in their early 20s, a police press release said. One of the men showed her a silver object that looked like a gun and said, “Give it to me.” The student gave the man her purse, and the three men fled north toward an apartment building on Church Street. The student was not injured.

Cubbage said the university has increased security this fall by adding security monitors in residence halls and increasing the number of officers both on-campus and in the surrounding areas. The university urges students to use caution when walking at night, and to use the shuttles and SafeRide services.

Weinberg sophomore Maya Mitchell said she usually walks with other people at night.

“It’s nerve-wracking because I walked downtown by myself last night,” she said. “It’s kind of a reminder not to do that. I usually feel safe but I usually don’t go by myself.”Reach Annie Martin at [email protected].
