Daily Takes 15 Awards At Illinois Press Convention

The Daily Northwestern won a total of 15 awards Saturday at the 2007 Illinois College Press Association convention.

First place:

-Editorial writing: “Housing bill is council’s shame,” by Michael Beder (Oct. 26, 2006).

-Special section: “The Long Reach of Roe,” by Alex Doniach, Corrie Driebusch, Robert Samuels, Erin Stock (Jan. 20, 2006).

-General column: “Win the war on obesity? Fat chance,” by Derek Thompson (April 25, 2006).

Second place:

-In-depth reporting: “Even more of a minority,” by Jennifer Chen (Nov. 21, 2006).

-News reporting: “Tech explosion injures 2,” by Nitesh Srivastava (Oct. 5, 2006).

-Front-page design: Lindsay Minnema, Jessica Cheng.

-News photo: University Police officer injured in a traffic stop, by Chris Danzig (April 13, 2006).

-Editorial page: Michael Beder, Michelle Ma, Tina Trenkner, Derek Thompson.

Third place:

-Sports news: “NU team accused of hazing,” by Anthony Tao (May 16, 2006).

-Sports photo: Softball pitcher Eileen Canney, by Matt Watras (April 26, 2006).

The Daily also received honorable mention awards for general excellence, in-depth reporting, photo essay, sports photo and spot news photo. The newspaper won nine awards at last year’s convention.
