The Evanston Police Department will get a new chief of police soon.
Julia Carroll, Evanston City Manager, said she hopes to announce the decision within the next week.
“We are continuing to review the candidate we have identified, and continuing background and reference checks on that person,” Carroll said.
Carroll said she was not able to identify the candidate.
“We haven’t made a formal job offer,” she said. “They are not able to make (this) public on their end.”
The department is looking for a candidate who possesses qualities similar to former chief Frank Kaminski, who was appointed director of safety at Evanston Township High School in May, Carroll said.
“The chief has to be a good general leader for the community,” she said. “(Kaminski) was very respected. We want the new person to bring the same level of community involvement.”
Weinberg sophomore Luke Rouser said he wishes the selection process was more transparent so students could know how the candidate was being chosen.
But he said he also wishes students were more interested in the appointment of the person who will be responsible for their safety off campus.
“It’s more important than you think at first,” Rouser said. “I wish what’s going on was made more available to us.”
