Big Herm’s is one of the remnants of classic Chicago dive bars; if you drink, or plan to do so with sophistication, stop reading this review now. Located at 409 W. Washington St., Big Herm’s is a wonderful hot dog/beer-and-shot joint, offering hot food and cool drinks at sweet prices.
Food-wise, the Big Herm’s menu features egg sandwiches, omelets, burgers, brats, sausages, tacos, tamales, soups, sandwiches and fries, among many other variations. Even better, every option costs under $5 (except for some special dishes that max out at a mere $5.50).
The bar here is pretty small, but it’s equipped with enough variety to make you appreciate it. When you really need to quench your thirst, cans of Bud and Miller Light can be ordered by the bucket. Coronas can be found here, too, along with several different liquors – perfect for shots when you’re desperate. Keep in mind, however, that Big Herm’s is a cash-only establishment.
But what really stands out about the bar is its absolutely prime location in the city. It’s right across the river from the Civic Opera House, and, conveniently, about a one-minute walk from the Ogilvy Transportation Center, if you decide to go to the city via the Metra.
Another unique feature of this dive is the spacious outdoor patio area, which is right above the river. It seems the perfect venue to enjoy spring days – even if you’re not enjoying them with class.
Big Herm’s is officially open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, but it does extend its hours during the summer, depending on nightly business.
